You’re With Us Goes to the Museum of Ice Cream
By Shira Laucharoen
It was a day of treats and laughter this past Monday. You’re With Us! brought a group of participants and staff from Boston and the North Shore to the Museum of Ice Cream, where friendships were forged and fun was had by all. We arrived at the Seaport location at 9 am, and while it was a chilly day, excitement was felt as we waited for a tour of the space.
When we were let in, guides instructed us to fill out our “ice cream names” on labels. To get through one of the doors, we had to shout a password as loudly as we could. Once we stepped into the first room, popsicles from Friendly’s were handed out. We entered a diner, where visitors were welcome to order milkshakes, and then we proceeded to our first adventure. In the brightly colored area, we played trivia games and read fun facts about how ice cream is enjoyed around the world.
Our group took our seats at “The Creamliner,” a pretend airline that was complete with rows of seats and a screen that made the experience interactive. An attendant brought us samples of creamsicle ice cream with a pineapple and vanilla flavor. After that, we explored a hall of refrigerator doors and a cookie living room where you could press a bell and receive a mini ice cream sandwich. We navigated a rainbow hallway and a tribute to Fenway Park, where cartons of cotton candy were served. In another space, we were encouraged to try the most unusual sample yet — lobster roll flavored ice cream. Finally, we ended our trip with a slide that landed us in a sprinkle pool, where participants could relax and feel like kids for a day.
Our mentees and staff had a blast at the Museum of Ice Cream and lit up while taking a wonderful escape. The You’re With Us! group had genuine enthusiasm and joy while celebrating something that everyone can connect over — ice cream. I wouldn’t have expected that an early morning on a Monday could be the perfect time for us all to get together for an activity, but there was something about how this all happened that felt special.
